🪛Valve Actuator Installation

This tutorial shows how to connect a valve actuator from any vendor including Hayward, Jandy or Pentair. Pentair Intellivalves are not supported.

Hayward Valve Actuator

Tools Needed

Before we start hooking up your valve, you'll need the following tools:

• Clyr Controller

• A small flathead screwdriver

• A large Phillips screwdriver

• A 24VAC Clyr Power Supply

Step 1 - Connect your controller

Before you begin, please make sure you have powered on and connected your Clyr Controller.

Step 2 - Install 24VAC Outdoor Power Supply

RISK OF ELECTROCUTION AND SHOCK - Before proceeding, please turn off the breaker to the pump to disconnect the 120-240VAC power.

Please locate a 120-240VAC outdoor rated outlet to plug in the outdoor power supply for the valve.

Please note that this power supply is fully waterproof and can be mounted outside itself.

Step 3 - Wire 24VAC to Clyr Controller

When wiring up the power supply to the controller, please make sure that the Brown wire (HOT) is on the left and Blue (COM) is on the right.

Step 4 - Choosing a valve port

You will see 4 available valve ports on the side of the Clyr Controller. The labels are on the inside of the white connectors and are labeled "Valve 1, Valve 2, Valve 3, Valve 4". Please select a valve port. It does not matter which Valve port you choose for suction or return as these variables are set in the software.

The valve will only plug in 1 direction due to the connector but the black wire should be on top as shown in the picture above.

Step 5 - Setting the default direction

The default direction of the valve handle is important as this will be configured to be the default direction when the system is off, system state is unknown, or any other cases. With the valve plugged in and the 24VAC plugged in, please locate the metal switch on the bottom of the valve or side of the valve, depending on the vendor.

The switch may be in the middle or "off" position. Please flip the switch back or forth so that the valve starts to move in the direction and stops at your desired default position.

Note - if your valve actuator isn't moving at this point, you need to check that the 24VAC power supply is actually powered on as the valve should move when the switch is engaged

Step 6 - Turn breaker back on

At this point, if the wires are tight and the colors match we're almost ready to add the valve in our app and test it out. Go ahead and turn the breaker back on and then we'll head to the app.

Step 7 - Add valve in app

You should have already added a Clyr Controller to your pool location in the app at this point. If you haven't check this out first:

If this has been done you can proceed. Go to your pool location and click "Settings"-> "Devices"-> "Add" -> "Pool Equipment". Once you're on the pool equipment page, we'll select a Valve Actuator.

Once you select valve actuator, we'll need to configure the valve.

First, choose a name for the valve. You will likely want to name the valve based on which side of the pump the valve is on. If the valve you plugged in sits pre-pump, you'll want to give it a name like "suction". If the valve sits post-pump, you will want to name the valve "return". You could also choose useful names like Spa Valve, or water feature, if those help you remember.

Next, you need to add labels for the pump directions. NOTE, you only need to likely add 2 labels and can leave the other labels blank. Useful labels typically are to note where the water is coming from or going to. Please see image below as an example.

In the image above, we labeled direction 1 (left side) as water going to the pool and we labeled label 2 (right side) "bubbler" to note that the water is going to the bubbler. These labels are only to help you remember in the app what each valve rotation is doing.

Finally, you need to select which label is set as your default direction. For setting the default direction, your valve should be currently in the default position as this is set.

In the example above, we select the label "Pool" as the default direction and our current valve position should match this setting.

Click "Save" and you're done.

Step 8 - Test the valve

Now that the valve has been added and the power is on, quickly jump to the home screen, go to schedules, and add a schedule for your valve. After setting a quick schedule, if you selected the position which is NOT the default, the valve should immediately move to that position.

Troubleshooting

1. I wired everything up but the valve is not turning when I set a schedule

First, make sure that you selected the right valve port on the board (Valve 1) and you configured the correct valve in the app

Second, ensure that with the 24VAC power plugged in that flipping the metal switch actually moves the valve handle. If it does not, there's likely a power issue to the 24VAC power supply

Third, ensure that the valve handle is properly seated on the valve. Sometimes on Hayward valves or Turk valves, the plastic on the bottom of the valve which connects to the valve itself is not all the way pressed down and this prevents the valve from moving.
